Back when we did our annual reader survey for our blog-anniversary, we asked you all what other blogs you read. Mostly, we wanted to make sure that you actually have good taste in blogs. If you all read only terrible blogs and Plaster & Disaster, what does that say about us? However, when we looked at the list we realized two things: First, you all have pretty good taste in blogs! Let the self-congratulatory back-patting ensue. Second, you sourced a great list of reading material that would probably be worth sharing.
Hence, today we’re sharing back some of the top DIY/decorating blogs that you, our readers, like to read. We know that Plaster & Disaster is your favorite and will always remain your favorite, but you might enjoy checking these ones out, too 🙂
The New Finds:
These two new (to us, at least) blogs are definitely going to make it on our reading list!
Written by Alison (aka Scoops), this blog is awesome! Alison’s home is an extraordinary mix of bold, eclectic MCM pieces and gorgeous DIYs, sort of like what we aspire to have. She seems to be particularly known for her DIY light fixtures (like this sconce) but she does other awesome projects as well. The tone is accessible and she doesn’t over-write – her posts are short and to the point. She also has great taste and does some really beautiful product and space round-ups. We should probably be friends.
Unfortunately an infrequent poster, but MAN, Sandra gets up to some real, serious projects. This is a heavy DIY home improvement blog with ambitious projects and tool reviews. Pretty much every sentence in one of her posts would be an entire post on our blog (e.g., “I covered the entire ceiling with 36″ wide, FibaFuse reinforcement fabric”). Her projects turn out awesome, and her writing is funny and down-to-earth. We also like her slogan (build it like a girl). If you want to feel like a total DIY-amateur and also learn a whole lot, you should check out this blog!
The Honorable Mentions:
- Making it Lovely – Borderline for the “big names” list, with gorgeous designs in a totally amazing house.
- The Interior Frugalista – More of a shabby-chic style than our taste usually runs, but hilarious, “real-person” writing and some really cool projects and great tips. Check it out!
The Big Names:
Unsurprisingly, many of our readers are readers of DIY blogs in general, and so of course you all read some of the same major/well known blogs as we do. Here are the most frequently mentioned ones. If you don’t know of these guys, we urge you to go and check them out!
- Young House Love
- Manhatten Nest
- Apartment Therapy
- Centsational Girl
- Little Green Notebook
- Emily Henderson
- Door Sixteen
- Yellow Brick Home
- House*Tweaking
- Miss Mustard Seed
There are also a few other big name ones that some of you may read that we’re not going to mention here, because of that whole “if you don’t have something nice to say” thing…
So, clearly, you guys have great taste. Just don’t forget about us while you’re hanging out with all of your new friends!

Well, I’m only human so what this reader wants to know is who are the ones you aren’t mentioning! But I agree with your reticence. I don’t name names either.
Which is why I’ll say only that I got seriously bored with one of the “Big Names” because it was getting to be all white, all the time.
Meanwhile, I’m having fun on the Interior Frugalista. 🙂

Glad you like her Bonnie – she is hilarious!

You listed many of the blogs I subscribe to.
I think some of you would enjoy
In My Own Style.
Diane sold a house in Pennsylavania and moved to a lake community in South Carolina.
She just finished renovating her kitchen and she
always has tips to make DIY a little easier and
she definitely knows how to stretch a buck.
She and her husband have done some great updates on their house and she also has posts on decorating and using lots of color to bring your personality to your home.
As two people who are NOT afraid of color…
I think you both would enjoy her blog.

Thanks Debo – In My Own Style looks awesome! Love the brightness!

I follow you. 🙂 I also enjoy Chris Loves Julia and Jenna Sue. CLJ has a great taste, and Jenna Sue can make anything out of nothing. Yellow Brick Home is also one of my favorites, and it is on your list.
If you like blogs about the restoration and renovation of old houses, feel free to take a peek at our blog. Our Victorian/Colonial mish-mash house was built circa 1885. It’s the best of times. It’s the worst of times and all that jazz in between.

Thanks, Stacy! Those are good suggestions – and I love your blog! I can’t wait to see what you do with the library 🙂

I think I mentioned this blog awhile ago when you asked about good writing, but I love reading https://projectophile.net/. Clare is SO funny, clever and resourceful. She doesn’t post too often, but you will snort out loud dozens of times in each post (there’s some great DIY and home repair substance as well).
Naomi says
Hilarious Susan! Definitely one I will add to my list to follow – thanks!

Oh, I have always loved Scoops at Deuce City, she is really hardworking and interesting and we both named a son “Gus.” I also agree with Stacy, above, about Jenna Sue – she has a VERY good eye. I have several small infrequent blogs that I follow because they are more realistic than some of the big BIG blogs but I do love good photography and the more professional bloggers seem to take more time with that. I would add Taking Notes by Katrin in Berlin. She writes (beautifully) in English and her house is wonderful. Of course, I am jealous of all of her pets.
Naomi says
Totally agree – the photography really matters in seeing and getting the projects (and pretty pictures are part of the reason that we all read!). There are those rare gem smaller blogs that do it well but hard to find! That said, Taking Notes has gorgeous pictures!

I’ve just started (yesterday) a blog to record the renovation of a 39 sqm apartment in Oslo where I live with my boyfriend. We’ll (mostly I, but the process is teamwork) write about the challenge to make it work for two people. The apartment building is in a functionalist style from 1940, so we want to complement this with a minimalist look (and let’s face it, it’s a small space). But I’ve always been a fan of eclectic style, and couldn’t bear to live in a white box. So hopefully the result will be an interesting mix of second hand furniture, IKEA + DIY and functional solutions for our place. If this sounds interesting, take a look at: 39sqm.com
I’ve been looking for more blogs to read myself, so I’ll definitely check out the ones you listed.
Naomi says
Cool, Millie! Congratulations on the new blog! Looks like that place has a lot of great features to work with (love the brick). Can’t wait to see more.
Mille says
Thank you! More is on its way 🙂
