Happy Friday! I’m just stopping by with a really quick post about a craft “project” that took literally 10 minutes and is probably the easiest thing I have ever done. I hope you still feel it’s worthy of your attention. If not, that’s fine too.
As you know, we recently got back from a trip to Iceland and Scotland, which was amazing (more on our time in each country here and here). We mostly used credit cards while traveling because it’s just a lot easier, but we did get some cash in both countries and of course were left with some money that was too small to be worth changing back into US dollars by the end of the trip. I was thinking about it on the airplane home because we have a whole pile of coins from past trips abroad (dating as far back as when I lived in Australia when I was 14, because I am a sentimental packrat apparently), and I knew these coins would just join the party in the ziplock bag where they all live. Not exactly the most glamorous way to store travel mementos, but what else do you do with coins you can’t spend?
Then I had a flash of creative genius, or at least it felt that way because I had drunk a few beers to calm my airplane anxiety so I was feeling easily impressed with myself. What was this epiphany? Magnets!
It took me a little while to get my act together because I was busy turning my kitchen upside down, but when I finally got to the project it took me 10 minutes. First I got my ziplock full of non-US coins. Then I sorted through them to pick out some of the more visually-interesting ones. I picked the more interesting side of each one and placed them all face down. In cases where I liked both sides, I looked through my stash to see if I had two of the same so I could turn one side out on one and the other on the other. Then I put a dollop of liquid nails on the back of each one, and then pushed down some of the strong magnets I had on hand from the wedding guest favors I made a few years ago.
And that was it. Easiest craft ever, no way to fail. I left them to dry over night, and then the next day admired my handiwork.
Then I popped them on the fridge:
Now these reminders of some of our favorite trips are out of the ziplock and somewhere we can appreciate them more regularly. And if you’re wondering where they’re from, here they are labeled:
Clearly Great Britain and Iceland are well-represented, but it seems we’ve been holding onto coins from some very long-ago trips! Frankly I don’t know how we got the Singapore one, maybe Sam went there when he studied abroad in China in college? I will need to inquire.
That’s it for me today, hope you all have a lovely weekend!

These are really cute. What a great idea! I wish the U.S. had more interesting looking money.

Thanks Bonnie! I agree, why is our currency so boring?

What, no Mexican pesos?? I can send you some if you’d like to add to your magnet collection. Very clever idea, Sage. I like it!

I know, how could that be?!? Send some my way! 🙂
