Welcome to a new feature on Plaster & Disaster – Friday Favorite Fun Time!
JUST KIDDING DON’T LEAVE. This isn’t a new feature, because it would be a totally dumb new feature. Also, I recognize that I can’t make up a new feature just because I can’t get my adult self together to have a project to post about.
However, because I can’t get my adult self together to have a project to post about, today I am going to channel my inner child to share some examples of dinosaurs used tastefully in decor.
Why? Other than the obvious (dinosaurs are cool), I love looking at spaces that use whimsical elements in a way that still reads mature and under control. I’ve definitely seen some great and very tastefully done dinosaur-themed kids rooms, but that is not the focus of today. Today I am hoping to make the case that liking awesome things like dinosaurs is NOT antithetical to good, adult design.
The evidence:
1. DIY Dinosaur Toilet Paper Holder from The Chic Home: I love the blue, but I could also see it in white or gold – or even rose gold if it were a particularly trendy dinosaur.
2. DIY Jurassic Corn Cob Holders from Handmade Charlotte
3. Dinosaur Planter from Costal Moss on Etsy (affiliate link – read our policies): There are a ton of dinosaur planters out there, but this one is my favorite. It would look great on a white window sill. (Incidentally, I have white window sills…)
4. Dinosaur Faux Taxidermy from ModCloth: I think the world is taking faux taxidermy a little bit too far. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want this dinosaur head at the top of my stairs.
5. Days of Fold Ornament from ModCloth
6. Dinorsaur Book Ends on Brick and Mortar
7. Dinosaur and Succulent Wedding on Today Is: I am not totally sure what this says, but I do know that it is totally backing up my point.
Most of my favorite spaces have at least few whimsical or kitschy pieces thrown in (you know, like a table made out of a plastic cactus…). It makes it look like a real person lives there.
So what do you think? Would you ever use decorative dinosaurs in your home?
Bonnie says
I love the wedding cake. Sooo Jurassic Park!
I don’t have any dinosaurs, but I have a tiny Loch Ness Monster in push pins (Nessie Pins) hiding in plain sight on top of a bulletin board.
Also, my bathroom features octopi, very elegant. I would have preferred jellyfish, but couldn’t find any elegant ones.

Sounds like you’ve got a super cool house Bonnie! I love the whimsy elements…

I actually love the idea of Friday Favorite Fun Time, and this one was unexpected and Fun! Though I am not loving the blue dino toilet paper holder…looks like one of the children was just fooling around with his toy, the others were pretty cool. My personal favorite, the TRex head wall mounted, very cool!

BTW, National Park Service has called today Fossil Friday https://www.facebook.com/DinosaurNPS/?fref=nf
Naomi says
What a good coincidence! Glad you liked it!
Gretchen says
I pretty much ONLY decorate with dinosaurs. Okay, that’s not exactly true. But I’m a fan of some good dinosaur decor for sure!
Naomi says
Yes, you are one of my decorating role models for how you bring in cool, unexpected elements! Keep up the dinosaur.
I would also be curioius to see what a house would look like if it were ONLY decorated in dinosaurs…
Lee says
To your question: nope.
Naomi says
Oh well! I tried!
Mary Anne in Kentucky says
On examining the first picture closely I was disappointed to see that the fan isn’t part of the dinosaur. We need more dinosaur fans! Just think of a triceratops with the head spinning to be the fan.
Ever since I saw Gretchen’s sparkly dinosaurs I’ve kept my eye out for good dinosaur stuff, but I haven’t found any at the grocery, which is pretty much the only place I shop these days. Although they do have a toy section: I should stop hurrying so much.
Naomi says
Yes, me too! Totally with you that the world would be a better place with more dinosaur fans.
Not super surprised you’re not finding a ton of dinosaurs in the grocery store. Have you tried looking on the gusher boxes? They probably make some shaped like dinosaurs… though perhaps a little too sticky and delicious to make good decor.
Lynn G says
short answer – no .
Naomi says
More for me!

from late 3’s to 5 years old. I have also used it in a kindergarten class. The children enjoy the puppet show and are very attentive. They are able to remember all kinds of facts about each dinosaur, the environment in which they lived, and what made them extinct.
